It's not so much a hole, it's the join where the silencer slips over the pipe or vice versa... the sealing compound has come away and has left a small gap most of the way around. I think some putty and a bandage will do fine. It looks like someone has done it poorly before and not cleaned the surfaces thoroughly and it's just fallen away. I'll need some beer too it seems, wait for photos of my face bandaged to the exhaust...

On both sides of mine the mild steel union from the downpipes to the silencer had rotted to a fine tissue of rust. One side I made up with gun gum and a sleeve cut from an old biscuit tin lid from the days before the christmas biscuit tub was plastic, and on the other side I used an old aluminium printing plate to make the sleeve. Big Jubilee clips hold the sleeve in place on the left. On the right I was reduced to stringing smaller jubilee clips together to make long ones - it was that or spend money (!)
If you look closely at it, it all looks horrible, but when you sit on the bike you can't see it at all, and it works a treat.
