Hi - it seems that almost every week I'm needing to post here as my bike picks up new faults. So here is this week's fault:
When I accelerate above 40mph there is very very little power. At 60mph in 6th gear the rpm is around 5000. If I open the throttle full almost nothing happens. The Haynes manual seems to have lots of suggestions for poor acceleration at high speeds so rather than start at the top and work down I was wondering if there are any suggestions for a good first port of call?
Many thanks, Alan

might it be the air filter, and/or the air inlet.....had a similar problem, plastic covering part of the air intake was myquickly resolved problem..
sticking choke?

Hi - just checked the air filter and inlet. Both appeared ok although there was a little oil around the base of the air filter which is annoying since I installed the breather tube fix from Yamaha last year which should resolve that problem.
I took the whole air box off and the carbs underneath were very dirty on the outside so I gave these a good clean. Inside they looked ok (although a carb strip down and clean might be another avenue to go down).
As for the sticking choke would you mean by the handle bar controls or the other end or both? I'll check this out soon.

Is the problem apparent in other gears above 40mph? Before my rear brake failed on me last week I had a situation where it was fine in 4th at ~40mph, as soon as I changed up it really struggled. Going back down to 4th it seemed better.... hopefully there's not another underlying problem that I don't know about. My speculation is the rear brake was stuck on, at high revs the bike could cope, but at lower revs it strugged. After the rear brake failed completely (rattly brake pedal with no response from overheating the rear system I'm guessing) everything was fine and back to normal... except for the lack of rear brake for the ride home. When I removed the rear brake caliper for inspection it opened the can of worms (ref my caliper thread).

Update - took the fuel tank and air box off the carbs and gave the surrounds a very good clean before taking the bike out for a ride. The prob was still there - after 40mph acceleration was poor regardless of gear. I then decided to rev the nuts of it (to put it technically) whilst going up through the gears from standing. This seems to have solved the problem so I am left guessing that there was a piece of debris somewhere in the system which was blown away by high revs. Problem solved - although I don't not why!
