has anybody undone the allen screws and taken the tank locking cap mechanism/part off please?
It doesn't seem to want to move on mine, got another tank but the key is missing so want to use original.

Should come off OK - you got a nice fitting 4mm allen key or hex socket head? If one bolt is proving mega tight - give it a (slight) nudge in the wrong direction (tightening it) then try undo it again. They shouldn't be too tight so it's probably just a build-up of corrosion that needs 'cracking' off.

thanks - got all the allen keys out although one was tough but that's it then, the whole thing should come off? Perhaps the seal has welded itself to the metal, but if that's all I'll force it a bit.
unfortunately nothing about this in Haynes.

A word of caution. Stuff some rag into the petrol hole before you remove the screws. This will stop the small springs from diving into the tank when you remove them! Don't ask me how I know this

Open the filler with the key: Have you removed the allen bolt hidden underneath - near the filler hinge?

what small springs? - glad you warned me!
don't understand, there's the locking cap surround held on by eight or so allen screws I thought.
incidentally isn't it a bit odd locking your pertol away but anybody with a small allen set can get in.

Erm - none on mine . incidentally isn't it a bit odd locking your pertol away but anybody with a small allen set can get in. ... especially when you realise that only three of those outer bolts actually hold it to the tank - the others are just bling, for show ;D. (Mind you, the one hidden under the filler lid will catch a few folks out .)

Apologies if i appear alarmist. I had a need to dis-assemble mine due to an irritating high whistling noise if the bike was left in the sun. Thought I would be clever and clear the (obviously blocked) air vent. That's when i discovered the small springs!! Glad you have'nt found them yet
