I've just picked up a nice XJ600S, 1998 vintage. It needs new chain/sprockets and fork seals replacing otherwise it is reasonably clean and roadworthy.
However I bought this as a Winter project and am planning a full strip down, clean and some customisation.
I am looking for some inspiration/ideas from anyone who has customised a 600. I am currently thinking of a Rat Chop / Streetfighter bike. I think it might be a bit new to make into an old school cafe racer style.
If you have a customised bike and pics please could I see them. Also, any ideas/suggestions welcome!!
Thanks,
Matt

Here she is I have plenty of time to decide! Cafe Racer would be cool but it's a 1998 bike! When I get it in the garage and get the fairing/seat off it will give me a better idea of the lines available as I don't want to significantly mod the frame.

The frame is all wrong for a cafe racer. They look good as rats though, take the fairing off an stan back to look at the light and clocks on the fairing frame, perfect.
How much did you give for the bike? Was the rust extra? Don't put too much faith in the mainstand til you've given it a once-over!

The photo seems to make the rust look worse! Exhaust is stainless and in good nick, engine is tidy too. I'll certainly check the stand though, thanks! It was on the centre stand though and has been sat on it for the past few years.
I paid £150 (1998, 30k miles, runner) which I thought was a good price having spent a bit of time looking at project bikes on eBay this one came up locally in the classifieds (not eBay).

have a squint at a US site. XJ600 SECA II or something like that. there are some good examples on there. your first mod needs to be changing the rear wheel for a wider one. trawl the forum for jestertoby. he's done a few mods to his.

By 'eck I bet that turns in quick looking at how far he's dropped the forks through the yolks to allow the bars to fit.
You wouldn't want yout kecks flapping in the breeze either........ ;D

Found some great examples on the US forums, that's a nice one above. Having previously owned sports bikes I like the clip on bars. Not sure about the fully exposed chain though!
Will be a week before I can get mine into the garage and start taking a few bits off. Lot of ideas to consider.

Some nice front ends but too many standard backends. Am I the only person who finds the seat/backend extremely ugly??

Current thoughts are:
Matt Black Frame and Tank Aluminium Paint on the Engine and Wheels Clip-on Bars Chrome Gauges and Front Light + Micro Indicators Custom Rear Fairing and Single Seat
I'm also giving some thought to fixing the number plate on the side to get a really sharp, shortened and open back end.

Ever followed anyone with mini indicators? They are an absolute liability, and liable to get you in accidents or near-misses. Number plate on the side is liable to get you pulled over and a pished-off copper will then proceed to find anything else you are doing wrong. Not worth it. Other than that, keep us updated with pics, eh?

I thought number plate on the off side (facing backward obviously) was allowed or is that only on vintage bikes where it was part of the original design? EDIT: Just found this, maybe have to can that idea then: www.100-biker.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=6230
