I was giving my bike it's Sunday morning wash and brush up when I noticed that the offside chain adjuster was loose, on inspection also noticed wheel had moved very slightly...... I removed cotter pin and tried tightening axle bolt to find that it was loose. I loosened axle bolt and straightened wheel, retorqued axle nut and discovered that the cotter pin could not now stop the crown nut from coming loose. The wheel was replaced with a refurbished wheel last year which had all 5 bearings replaced, have not noticed any probs till now. To temporarily fix prob I have fitted an additional washer so the cotter pin fits in the crown of the nut now, but I can't fathom out how/why this has happened ? the bearings all seem fine no noise or play, bike rides and handles fine, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

There are "only" 4 bearings in the rear wheel?
Check that all spacers (inc middle spacer) are present and correct. Other than that maybe your axle has just got more and more stretched over the years? Keep an eye on it that it doesn't work loose again, which it would do if the threads are past it.

i stand corrected lol, not even sure where i got 5 from??? think senile dementia root cause lol, any way problem has now been diagnosed, off side bearing has split in half, don't know how or why yet, still trying to get other half out of wheel, but i have never seen a bearing break in this way before, I only got my scooter back on road yesterday after 6 weeks off road, at least i can still get about on 2 wheels! many thanks lads

No doubt you'll be changing all the bearings on the rear axle, including the sprocket carrier.........? If your axle nut has come un-done and lost adjustment then the wheel has not been running true and possibly affecting all the other bearings. Be safe.

I learnt a very valuable lesson this week, and am passing this experience on. I bought my Divi 3 yrs ago, and since then have been making improvements to it (I like to think I am) and 2 yrs ago I bought a pair of second hand wheels to refurbish and repaint. I finished them early last year, having fitted all new bearings dust seals after the paint job, also new discs and pads and chain and sprockets. Roughly this time last year I got round to fitting them and very pleased with result and since done appx 2-3k with them on. I regulary clean and maintain bike, and hence noticed spindle loose last week. Having changed the bearings refitting wheel it was clear something was still wrong, and the bearing splitting in half and collapsing after a yr was still bugging me. The crown nut was still screwing in to far when torqued up. I studied the parts fiche for ages, before realising that the spacer in the cush drive was missing and had been when i bought the wheel, so it didn't register when i refurbished the wheel. Still having original wheel which i hope to refurbish when i get time, removing cush drive confirmed it and fortunately have part to replace missing spacer. Bike is back on road now:D and everything hunky dory again. I am still a little puzzled why the fault took so long to materialise, I believe it may have been because bearings were tight when refitted, they were torqued up to the recomended setting when fitted and did not notice anything untowards at the time. Regular cleaning and maintenance meant I spotted problem before an accident happened thankfully.

Thankfully you did eventually spot it, could have been a frightening outcome though Regular cleaning and maintenance meant I spotted problem before an accident happened thankfully. Regular maintenance doesn't nessacelery mean problems don't arise...the doors ajar Clive......
