Hi folks, yet again asking advice please. I have noticed over this past 14 months of ownership of my 600n that a small crack in the oil cooler pipe seems to have got worse. The crack has elongated by about 3 mm or more im sure in that time although I havnt actually kept a measurement, just been keeping an eye on it and its starting to worry me now. heres a pic. I have priced the bolt and o ring needed to replace the cooler a few months back with my local yam dealer and they told me that part no. - 904-01201-45 - BOLT. UNION(3TJ) is now part no. - 90401-20007 and is £29.36p. 932-10877-23 - O-RING(1KF) @ £4.58p I was going to order them just to have if needed anyway but would prefer to keep the cooler as otherwise its in good nick. I had a look in the parts catalogue and there doesnt seem to be anything apart from the whole pipe available. Could this be bodged with some chemical metal do you think? Thanks very much.

I suffered the dreaded oil pipe failure on my '97 600N. Under that cracked section the pipe has a bulge over which the flexible part of the pipe runs and is effectively clamped on by the (cracked) sheath. The sheath was fine on mine but there was a rusted pinhole leak in the pipe itself beneath the sheath area. If your pipes are sound you could replace the sheaths and flexible pipe with a suitable length of oil pipe and jubilee clips (clips from Hafords). Do a search on this site and you will find all the info you need to know to do that. I've simply converted the bike to pre-cooler specs. Runs just fine but is (in my opinion) more buzzy than before due to the hotter oil temp (I synched the carbs which did improve things but did not eliminate the classic divvy 4,000rpm vibe).

Thanks boozeman. I was kind of hoping that as it isnt leaking any oil from that crack that I could use some chemical metal maybe to stop it getting worse. I have looked arround before on the subject of oil cooler removal and still I am still a bit sketchy to be honest. I am afraid of getting half way through the job and getting stuck with no transport to go get parts or tools so just need to confirm a few things.
If im cutting the pipes then the adapter plate is going to have to come off anyway isnt it to allow me to cut the lower half of the pipes. They are not the most accessable to get at with a hacksaw and I wouldnt want any metal bits get in the engine. I think I will order the shorter union bolt and o ring and have them for standby just in case I make a hash of cutting.
Looking at the diagram above leads me to believe I will need to have some circlip pliers in order to remove the adapter plate and from reading around it seems a 27mm socket is required to remove the union bolt is that correct? Would 10mm internal diameter oil hose be suitable and does it have to be rated for a certain temperature to be safe?
If I remove the adapter plate #1 are parts #2,3,4,5 and 6 still needed?

As boozeman says, the cracked part is a crimped-on clip that holds the flexible hose onto the solid one. It's holding at the moment, but once the crack extends far enough it will let go and the flex hose will come away from the solid pipe and leave you (and your back tyre, which could be dodgy) covered in oil, and stranded at the side of the road.
So I'd suggest you simply cut the cracked piece off completely and replace it with a jubille clip.

Sorry to sound dim but cutting this cracked sheath bit off, will that still not require that I remove the oil pipes first to do this? Does putting a jubille clip around it mean I dont need to get oil hose then or cut the pipes?

Just an update to let you know that I think I have it sorted now thanks to your help. It put up a bit of a fight to get it to come off but once I got the big screwdriver and pliers out it came quietly. The hose braiding is a bit frayed due to my lack of dremel skills but otherwise no damage and after a bit of a run, doesnt seem to be leaking...... yet. Heres a few more pics.
