Hi, I have Yamaha XJ 600 S Diversion (1999) and I have had it standing for about three years now. Now there is a "howling" sound, when using 4th gear (other gears are fine). Any ideas what is wrong??

Have you changed the oil (and filter) recently? If not, do it before anything else - 3-year-old oil is not going to be very good at lubricating.
If you do change the oil, check for debris in the old stuff (the motorcycling equivalent of a stool test, if you like) - but accept that there will be odd black bits (clutch lining) and metal particles - you're just looking for bigger lumps.
But actually it's true that all the Yamaha 600's that I've ever ridden (Thundercat, Fazers old and new, Diversion) had a whine of some sort on 4th gear. It's usually most noticeable at lower speeds. I'd say, just ride it and don't worry unless it starts to get worse.

Thanks, Bob, for the very quick answer. The oil has been changed last summer, but we are going to change it again, just in case. Good to know also your experience about the "common whining". Parra

Don't worry.
Mine did this. (1996, been stood doing very little for the past few years.)
Most noticeable at 35-45 mph - in 4th gear. Nothing at that speed in 3rd or in 5th - so logically you think it must be the gearbox and can't be the chain.
But no, dear reader, suspend disbelief and read on.
It still did it after oil change, but after doing a full clean of chain and sprockets it reduced dramatically.
Having now put about 2000 miles on it has gone completely.
