Hi, I have a xj600n ,with 6k miles on the clock, which is genuine mileage , it has developed valve noise although still starts and runs fine , the clearences are mostly ok ,although I am unsure of the exact exhaust clearence, the manual says 0.21mm - 0.25 mm , but this can be reduced to 0.18mm can anyone clarify, I also have no clearence whatsoever on no3 inlet ,I have ordered new shims for 2 or 3 of the clearences ,but the rest are within limits, the bike is 52 plate ,is it normal for a low mileage xj6 to need this work so soon, I have noticed after removing the cams that there is scoring on cams and cam caps on rhs of engine not bad ridges but wear , is it possible that it has been starved of oil ? and picked up on the bearings , i have never run it short of oil ,but did use semi-synthetic oil on last oil change any help would be good

If the bike is run on the sidestand for long, particularly with low oil, this could cause the top right of the engine to run with no good oil film. With so few miles, this bike will have spent a lot of time in the garage. If you are really unlucky the owner has popped out to the garage every couple of weeks (long enough for the oil film to drain down to the sump) and started the bike "just to keep it running". He will have left it running on the sidestand for 10 minutes until the condensation cleared, then gone indoors for a congratulatory cup of tea.
It's bad news to use a bike with zero clearance, the valve can't touch the head and can't sink its heat, this is how you get burnt valves very very quickly.

I think Amorti has hit the nail on the head with the sidestand thing. I wouldn't have thought valve clearances on a bike with so few miles should be needing done but obviously they are.
I always used semi Synth in the D9 shouldn't be a problem.

Also if the bike's only been run for short periods and condensation has built up in the valve cover it would accelerate wear. Normally these engines can do many tens of 1,000's of miles without visible wear of cams or shims.
As to exhaust valve clearance, personally I'd run at the bottom end of the manual clearance, i.e. as close to 0.21 mm as possible, to be on the safe side, and just put up with the noise - they all do that, sir!
Semi-synth oil is fine so long as you do regular oil and filter changes - the book says every 4,000 but if it does mostly long runs I'd be happy to stretch that to 6,000 or yearly, whichever comes first. Some use Halfords semi-synth car oil, others like diesel engine oil - the clutch on the D6 isn't heavily loaded so seems to be able to cope with a "slipperier" oil - it doesn't seem to matter too much as long as it's the right grade (10W/40). Full synth is OTT.

thanks for your help, it was dead quiet when I first got it at 4500 miles , pished me off slightly as bike is mint , if I re-shim and still have noise , is it worth swapping head,cams etc with a good secondhand set, as I ,m pretty good at mechanics generally , or should I just put up with tappety noise, new head and cams are 2.8k from yamaha!!!! a mate reckons I SHOULD STICK SOME WYNNS IN ,but dont like the idea much ,thanks again

They pretty much all have a bit of a rattle, once you've sorted the shims I'd stop worrying about it.
