After standing overnight it seems my clutch plates are stuck together and I need to put it in gear and move it to unstick before starting up, otherwise the jump when I engage first gear is a reall eye-waterer.
After a shorter standing time there is no problem, and it slides into 1st as gentle and smooth as anything.
In all other respects the clutch and gearbox behave perfectly.
1600 miles since last oil change. (A castrol oil, I can't just remember the exact name)
Is it time for new oil? different oil? a twist and go scooter?

the divi is a bit known for the first gear clunck.... i found that starting it and leave it run for a few moments while 'pumping' the clutch lever a few times before trying to engage first worked for me. I would have thought the 'wrong' oil would produce slip more than sticking...
aside.. keep the oil level to top of sight glass,

Time for a twist and go.
I pump the clutch a few times before engaging 1st, seems to work. Always changed the oil every 2000 miles. Filter every 4000.

Thanks chaps - it always helps to know when it's a known thing, rather than something I'm doing wrong.
I'll be off down the Twist'n'Go section of Scooters'R'Us now.
(My mate Phil always used to refer to scooters as "Poof Chariots".)

My XJ6 gives quite a clunk when selecting first gear, some bikes are worse than others, my old D9 and our company blackbird select first gear silently

I could bear "quite a clunk" - but mine is to the point where it counts as gearbox abuse unless I do as I described above to just loosen the clutch.

does anybody else find the 600 clutch a bit stiff - don't give it a thought when riding but pulling in the clutch lever went stationary it seems quite an effort, maybe i need a new cable, its slightly frayed at the top

Are you parking it on the side stand?
This used to be a common discussion on here many moons ago and most owners found that parking on the main stand rather than the side stand helped. however, I rarely used the main stand on any of my 3 divvy's and never had a problem even when the bike was left for several days (or even weeks).
Hopefully the old guys will drag their minds out of the gutter soon

Almost always on the centre stand. I often feel slightly distrusting of a side stand.

Almost always on the centre stand. I often feel slightly distrusting of a side stand. I have exactly the same issue with mine, and that is always on the centre stand. I just do what you said - rock it back and forth in gear before starting from cold after being stood a day or two, engages sweet as a nut all day after that.

Plenty of oil (cheap 20/50 motor oil) eventually did the trick - to the point where I'd feel the lever coming right back to the bar on gearchanges whereas before it was only going part way. Check the cable first to make sure there aren't any broken or worn strands.

I've never owned a bike that hasn't clunked or even stalled when first engaging gear. As said , pull in the clutch and wait a few seconds, or, as a few of our more"experienced" members will recall, heave in the clutch and give the kickstart a couple of goes! Charlie
