Anyone done a successful replacement of one of these that doesnt involve paying £17! for genuine part. rubber has swollen and is now preventing caliper from floating so brake seizing on. Anyone tried grease in hole and no rubber? Advice- cheap parts or succesful bodge please

You can't run it without a boot, it'll not work / rattle / be dangerous. Try taking the boot off and see what happens just spinning the wheel on the centre stand if you are seriously considering that.
I replaced the boots on mine due to swelling and seizing, probably same as yours. I'd forgotten they were so expensive but I must've paid it. Top tip - only ever lube with silicon-based grease or it will happen again before you know what's going on if you use regular grease (includes copaslip).
Generally best not to take chances on brakes!!
