Had a stange thing happen yesterday. Checked the oil level in the windo and there was none! Alarms rang, so shot some more oil in thinking it'll show up in no time... Nothing! So after putting in about 1.5ltrs I thought that's not right, the bike would complain had it had so little oil. Started it, all was fine, so thought I'd ride home and see how it goes, 20mls later oil comes pouring (as in the same rate it is poured into the engine!!!) out the air box and around the carbs all over cylinders and exhaust, cloud of smoke on the roundabout, and I pull over on a side road, switch off and watch about half a litre pour all over the road. I waited a bit for it to stop, then gently rode the 3 mls home, look in the window and it's covered, so I drained the sump into a clean oil tray and measured back in the standard 2,2ltrs, which now covers the window even whilst pouring. Anyone any ideas why the oil wouldn't show up in the window before but now did? Oil was good oil, in good condition, which is why I put it back in, so I'm baffled!!! Any suggestions please? Thanks

Might be obvious but you didn't check it while on the sidestand or on a hill ?
You did give it time to settle into the sump.

Sometimes the window is clouded over and you can't see inside, could that be the case? If the oil is particularly dirty it might look like "dark" which your eye might interpret as empty.

Nope, bike was level, then tipped over as far as possible to get oil toflow onto windo, window is clean, you can see the shiny bare metal of the plate behind the window onto which the oil shows up.
It was level, and on centre stand. The crux is there was twice as much oil as should be and it still did not show on the window. Now I have refilled it and it has decided to show I can catagorically say it was not showing for some reason...
Who knows... One of those weird misteries I guess. I wondered whether anyone else had expoerienced this or heard of it and could shed some light. Thanks gents

The Oil has to be somewhere, did you give it enough time to return to the sump ?

well the bike was warm when I checked and should drain immediately. The point is I put in as much again as should be in and still no sign. When it pumped out it drained to the windo straight away, and when I drained and refilled it the oil was in the windo as soon as I poured it in. It poured over the window!!!
And yes, it was given loads of time to drain whilst I was doing other things. Not to the bike...

Is it at all possible there was an air bubble sitting in the window and for some reason didn't clear the glass? Only starting the bike and stirring the oil around dislodged the 'bubble'. You were lucky the oil had somewhere to go; I bought a GS400 which wouldn't go over 60mph. It turned out the oil had been over-filled limiting the free action of the inlet and firing strokes! No harm done, thankfully. Pilgrim

I suppose an air bubble would be the only explanation, good thinking pilgrim!!!
Thanks for the responses gents. Not much else I can do with it really, oil is showing now and bike is good so thanks for the help
