Ok if you have read my previous thread about valve clearences you will know i have been having a problem with the bike idling at around 3000rpm. So today i gave cleaning the carburettors a go i managed to clean out 1 & 2 but could not get the float chamber screws out 3 & 4 i did however manage to get the diaphram cover off of cylinder 4 and clean that. I never noticed any dirt in 1 & 2 and i removed the jets and sprayed cleaner through them all, built it all back up but it is still idling at about 2500 rpm. It does however drop to 1500rpm when i engage a gear with or without the clutch in, but as soon as it is back in nuetral it shoots up again. When it is really cold it will idle at 1200 for about 5 mins before it goes up. Also noticed with it idling at 2500 exhuast number 1 i can put my hand on, i removed plug which was wet and replaced it with plug from cylinder 4 and still the pipe was cold.
Could this all still be a blocked jet somewhere? If it is still blocked jets any tips on cleaning them should i strip down all 4 and leave them submerged in some cleaning liquid overnight? Also anyone know where i could get adapters for going into the vacuum holes for syncing the carbs? I tried spraying flammable liquid around the carb rubbers just to check they were not leaking and it was fine.

No i havn't i have a tester though will try it, should i remove all plugs first or just the one im testing?

Remove all plugs and when testing, open the throttle fully

You maybe want to make sure you're getting a spark, Could be a knackered lead. The change in idle is unusual, Could be that the jets are slightly blocked, or maybe even slightly enlarged, Give them a balance one you get that first chamber sorted

boiling water will clean out jets, but they need removing from the carbs. or you could get one of those sonic cleaners for jewelry if you decide to poke through the jets use some copper wire or bristle you can get the carb fittings from any carb balancer manufacturer, try morgan. check you dont have an airleak, by spraying around the carb rubbers with wd40, but chances are that you have a blocked jet, clean the float needle seats, as number one could be flooding I was plagued with this problem on my last bike a z550

Ok went out to have another look tonight hooked up my compression tester and got nothing from all cylinders which i thought was wierd as it was brand new. So i tried it on my car and the most i got was 10psi so the tester it knackered that is what £10 buys you on ebay. Going to order a better one tonight. There is some compression though as it blows my finger out of the spark plug hole which i know is not the best way to gauge the engines health. When the new one comes i will post my results.
Yes i am getting a spark doesn't look to strong to me for example compared to my car, but all 4 look to be about the same.
I have tried spraying the inlet rubbers and nothing happens so no leaks there.
Does anyone know the size of thread i will need on the carb adapters for balancing them?

Right got the new tester today and not good news tested cylinder 4 got 130psi, cylinder 3 125psi looking good i thought so i tried the troubled cylinder 1 and only got a max of 60psi my bike shortly ran out of battery so have it on charge to try out cyliner 2. So it is not looking to good what would be my next route cylinder head off?

Don't panic just yet, your compression readings will have been affected by a lazy battery Do no1 again with a fresh battery, just to make sure....

As the general says...
When you have done your test and written down the results, the next thing to do is squirt a little oil down each spark plug hole and test again.
If the second readings are the same as the first, suspect the top end (Valves)
If the second readings are much higher, suspect the bottom end (rings)

Ok so battery charged tried again so cylinder 4 is 130, cylinder 3 and 2 are both 120 so they are ok. Cylinder 1 i got 61psi squirted a little bit of oil in it went to 71psi tried a little more oil and i got 81psi so would that be the piston rings at fault?
What is the cost going to be doing these? I can do all the work myself i am currently almost through my 1st as an apprentice car mechanic so i can do the work i just need help with diagnosing faults.
I have not long bought the bike and was hoping it was going to be an easy fix (dirty carb) as it had been sitting outside for 8+ months. I paid £375 and thought i did alright maybe not.
Would i be wise to replace all the rings or just the offending ones? Also anything else i should do with it stripped that far down?
The bike has done 35000 miles surley this is not common at this mileage is it?

Ok so im thinking about stripping it down tomorrow would it be obvious when the barrels are off the pistons if it really is the rings?

Just experienced a similar thing on my 1993 xj 600, 30k on the clock, I've decided to scrap it, Cheapest thing to do was a donor engine, Looking at £150-£200 for that

Ok if im going to break it for parts what would i need to inform the dvla? It is currently taxed would i just need to sorn it?
