My first one, which had the original exhausts, used to do something like that. I think I traced it to one of the silencer clamps being loose, and managed to seal it with silicone sealant (the normal bathroom stuff - OK at the cooler end of the system). Bear in mind that there is a drain hole somewhere near the inlet end of the silencer.
But you've got to get down with your ear close to the system to identify where it's coming from. Or get your hand close to it so you can feel any hot gas escaping, or even use a bit of light tissue paper.
If you still have the original system, then it's probably time for a stainless one.

Better ask Pilgrim, he understands French. It translates into pfft in french! A bit like a burble but shorter, it can't be heard under the growl of my Marvins......... ;D

Hi, I am interested to know more about the drain hole. My 91 Xj600 has the original exhausts. I noticed a small hole on each pipe where the silencer meets the pipe, but they both look too perfect to be caused by fatique or rust. I did notice small whisps of gas coming out of each - so I filled them. Did I do wrong? I quess so if they were ment to be there? Any advice please. Thanks Griffs

I found these, and I assumed that they are to allow condensation to drain out. If you run the bike a short distance and then stand it, you find water comes out of these holes - so presumably if you fill them the bike stands with a puddle of water in the only-just-warm pipes and rots them.

Luckilly I don't do short distances, but if it is standard to have air bleed out of the exhaust I should remove my filling.
I assumed (wrongly) that I had a problem with the holes. I have never seen a vent before.

It's like the spit valve on a trumpet.

I wonder if blocking these small holes have contributed to the tiny irregular tick over....

my 1996 D600 did the same when it started, from cold it started on 3 cylinders and a 'pufft' noise was the 4 coming to life after a few seconds.
