Ruth's diversion is working and running fine apart from the fact that the engine cuts out when the side stand goes down irespective of whether it's in gear or not.
This glitch occured after some idiots in wales attempted to hot wire whilst trying to steal it.
The bike will also only start if the side stand is up and the clutch is pulled in. I'm not sure if that is correct or whether the bike sould start with out the clutch being pulled in when in neutral.
Both of us have tried folowing the wiring diagram in the haynes book of myths and legends but not to enough avail. The colour coding on the relay asemble is different to that on the diagram, basicaly help!
Wanting to be able to warm up the bike with out having to sit astride it. ?=-/ any ideas gladly welcome from befudeled in kent
We're both wondering if a dead diode in the relay asembly may be causing this issue.
Short synopsis Nuetral light works, neutral diode seems to work, clutch switch works, side stand switch seems to work.

Could be a dodgy neutral switch, or the wiring to it?

But how would the neutral light work if the switch were broken?

Could be a dodgy neutral switch, or the wiring to it? +1 - can't see how it could be anything else with those symptoms. It's under the sprocket cover, IIRC? You can test it easy enough - if it is in neutral does the light come on? If yes, it works. But even then it can still be a fault, figure out if the ECU is going to earth on the appropriate wire at the same time, there may be a break in the loom.

what are the correct colour codes in the ECU? the haynes seemd to tell an untruth in saying there is inly 1 black cable where in reality there seem to be 2. One of which goes to earth the other which dosen't.

ok further developments, the second Black actualt seems to be the black and grey from the throttle position sensor which when conected across to the black lead (ie ground) solves the issue code we have had for a while and alows the bike to run when the side stand is down. BUT it seems to do to good a job, the bike dosen' t now cut out when the side stand is down and it is put into gear.
I've tested the side stand switch, resistance of 38ish ohms when up and infinate resistance when down. I have also tested where the switch plug plugs in. The yellow and blue wire has infinate resistance to earth and the black wire gives me 0 resistance to earth (ie perfect continuity).
I'm not even sure any more if that is a step forward or a step back, but I'm fairly sure it's a step!
Your continued suport and sugestions are greatly apreciated, thanking you all in advance.

AH HA (not the band) solution found, though I still don't realy understand the problem fully.
By bridging the Black and grey wire on the Relay assembly to the light blue wire we got 80% there. ie the cut out worked when side stand went down and in gear but alowed running when the bike was in neutral, however the interesting quirk was when the side stand was up the neutral light stayed on permanantly!?
the solution has been to use a diode to bridge the cables instead of a cable, this makes it work. It's cured the throttle position sensor issue we were having and the side stand works and bike runs as and when it should with out the neutral light staying on permanantly. All in all result.
Thanks to all the contributers to this post as you helped confirm thoughts we were having and dispell other stupid ideas we may have been drifting down. regards David

I have that same issue I presumed it was normal. Bike will not run on side stand at all. On centre stand no problem. Side stand switch must be working because if i run bike then put side stand down the bike turns off. The nuetral light works fine as light is displayed on clock when in nuetral. If it's meant to be able to run on side stand in nuetral i'm going to investigate it. My bike is a D600S 1999
