My ignition switch has been getting gradually worse over the last few months. I now have to slide the key in and out whilst keeping a clockwise pressure on it until it finally turns. I'm expecting to be stranded somewhere very soon. Does anyone have any idea how much a new ignition switch costs and whether they are sold as part of a set (ie. the seat lock and ignition with same key). Also, are they difficult to change and any advice on how to go about it. I've phoned my local shop and they are going to get me a price for parts and fitting and another price for just the parts. I'm waiting for a call back but they are takng their time. Cheers, Phil (W Reg XJ600S)

I just got a call from MTC mtorcycles in Reading with prices. They want £142 for a genuine ignition barrel replacement or £52 for a patent copy. Apparently they can't provide a seat lock with the same key as the ignition. They can only do this for the N version and not the S. Does anyone know if the patent copy would be a good replcement for the original. Alternatively does anone know of abreaker th mighte ae ovth the ignition and seat lock at afrction of the price?
Cheers, Phil

Cheers, Phil they are only about £40 on ebay, or from wemoto, or patternparts. www.patternparts.net/?i=35318&ii=59have you tried cleaning out the lock using WD40 using the tube provided, its normally a cure

Thanks for the info.. I just contacted Pattern Parts and they wanted £40 + VAT. I decided to order the ignition from MTC instead for £52. They told me that they can get in for me by tomorrow. Now all I have to do is work out how to fit it. Do you know if it is just remove the screen and the black plastic surround around the clocks. Then remove 2 screws that hold it in place and replace without having to remove the rest of the fairing or the actual instruments. Is there any additional linkage for the steering lock? Never done it befor and it would be good to know what to expect. It's my only form of transport so i don't want to muck it up. Cheers, Phil

Pretty sure that the lock will be held in by non std screws. Often the ones with the dimple in the middle.

Cheers, Phil no, remove the bars keeping all the cables etc connected, lay the bars on a towel over the tank, loosen the top clamps that clamp the forks, remove the nut in the center, use a block of wood to drift the top yoke off, unplug the ignition switch at the plug. then you need to drill out the security bolts that hold the switch in place, better to use a pillar drill, but you can manage with a normal drill, then replace switch using the two security bolts that should come with the switch

someone tried to nick my CB500 two or three years ago. It gets Well Used; work, back, shopping, visiting and just going for a ride, I replaced the ignition barrel with a pattern one and it has shown no adverse signs of wear and tear.
