Hi, I have the 900s Diversion & am wondering what the score is with the cam chain on this bike. Is there any specific things I should be aware of and what is the average life of one. Does it have auto tensioners?
I used to have a cb900 and the cam chain came off on the A406 1 mile from home, bang went valves. I had one replaced on my 1st bike after test, CX500 and that had manual adjust but could get tensioner kit for it.
Any help appreciated guys.. XJ900S 2001

Cam chains are not an issue with this engine, there are bikes with over 100k miles still on the original, yes it is auto tensioned,
if it's not making a noise, leave it alone!

I can't believe this thread, whatever happened to the legendary Honda build quality ? Snapping timing chains on two of their models, surely not. I haven't heard of any timing chain problems on D9, though it was a timing chain question I answered years ago where I was advised, for some reason, that women should stick to the kitchen.

Indeed, but, other than the fact I have had bigger tits than the women who frequent this site, I have no idea why the advice was offered to me.

As said the camchain isn't worth worrying about! Mine's on the original at around 150k miles, it doesn't rattle and looks fine no sloppiness at all. The alternator chain is more likely to get sloppy and make a rattle after a while, but there's no tensioner on it so it would tend to do that anyway I'd say. Mine rattles slightly from cold (only at tickover) but then becomes quiet as soon as the bike's hot. I think a lot of the things on the 900 Diversion aren't worth worrying too much about, just ride it!
