Went out early today (about -2) and noticed after approx 30 miles that a worrying amount of oil had been ejected from the top vent on my shaft drive, covering the wheel and tyre. Spoke to TJ who told me that his D9 had also done this in the past. Over the next few hours of riding, the problem got less and less. Didnt ever see this on my other D9 so the questions are: 1. Do you know why this happened? 2. Has yours ever done this? 3. Has something happened to cause this?
When I got home I changed the Oil in the shaft drive (EP80) but am now concerned that it may do this again.
Can you advise please?

Clive - I would offload that bike as soon as possible, tell you what I will give y ;)ou 500 notes for it (should cover me for a new shaft drive) Mine did it too Clive, I also got very worried at the time, I think its the oil being thinner edit thicker in cold weather or somit. If it gets really bad just sell the bike to Trev like I did Dave ;D

Don't get me started on bliddy chain drives pal! Heard a bloke telling a story today of an accident he had last week. He had to do an emergency stop and endo'd just clipping the rear of the car he was trying to avoid. Bike dumped him off, and bike ended up upside down on its seat and bars (like when you change a pushbike tyre) with him sitting next to it uninjured. Until he decided the bike might fall on him, so he stuck his hand out to support it - right between the chain and sprocket Two operations later he hopes to get the use of his fingers back, but I think he lost the tip of one. Yowee ! Dave ;D

They all do that sir...... The cold makes the oil more viscous which means it ends up being flung around more than in warmer weather, and ends up making its' way out of the breather hole. At least you know the breather isn't blocked Just wipe off and keep an eye on the levels as there's only 200ml of the stuff in there to start with...... ;D

Yowee ! Dave ;D The MZ idea with rubber tubes enclosing the chain makes a lot of sense and it keeps the bike clean.

I'm new to the D9 and joy of joys, after a 70 mile blat this last weekend there's a fair amount of oil blown from the shaft breather. That caused me some concern, thinking I'd been sold a pup and all that. I visit the site and find that you've been here before and it's normal So thanks for your previous posts, you've put my mind at rest. Dan

Last time I looked, my D9 was ok. But if the cause is thick oil, maybe its worth trying a thinner EP grade in the winter. Or fit a long breather pipe along the shaft and up under the seat so rain can't get in. Its only ordinary steel, so it might be that the breather cap has rusted inside.

I finally solved this by draining the old oil and replacing with new EP80 (I couldn't find SAE80) and didn't need to replace the breather plug. A nice simple solution!
For info, after looking at a new one in the local Yammie dealer, the breather valve is not a valve at all, but has a small hole under the mushroom shaped cap. It's not screwed in to the wheel hub, but is an interference fit.
Change the oil and forget it...

It's never hapopened to mine. I'll have to go home and check if it has any oil in.

EP80 gear oil is correct AFAIK.
Its a two minute job to change as well. Just wish my new bike had shaft drive as chains are so messy.
My 900 only ever had this problem once when the weather was really cold, changed the oil and problem went. HTH.
