Hi Guys.......
Newbie here, just introduced myself on the Newbies thread....
Bought to-day a 2001 XJ900....in blue 22500 miles.....very clean and tidy with full Givi luggage, heated grips, crash bars and full service history, only a 100 kms ride so far, and pretty pleased with it.
Only fault I can find is the speedo is not illuminated, so guessing a bulb, is this fairly straight forward ? also is there a free w'shop manual download for this bike ?
Guess I'll be on for more info as time goes on....... Cheers Fergie

Easy but a little time consuming. 1. Screen removal. 2. Instrument trim removal. 3. Front indicator removal. 4. Front fairing removal. 5. Now you can fully access the instrument housing. ( I replaced the bulbs with led replacements which are far brighter than the originals. DON'T replace the low fuel warning bulb with led as the system won't function, stick with a standard bulb here.)

Thanks Tomcat, .....much like a VFR I had, probably stick with the original bulbs, any idea what type ? so I can pre-buy them... Fergie

You be a bit late fer plantin' em now, but put 'em in some good rich John Innes and keep 'em nice and warm and moist and you should have a good show come January.
Oops, thought this was a gardening thread...........

Get LED bulbs no risk of heat damage and a better looking light.

Get LED bulbs no risk of heat damage and a better looking light. 3w ones won't cause heat damage (Mr Yamaha fits 3.4w ones as standard).

He's right, 3w ones are, as defined by Yamaha. However, good quality led's are substantially brighter and illuminate the dash far more effectively. They should also last a lot longer, meaning less bike dismemberment to change one bulb!

Question from one who hasn't tried them: Are they a bit too bright at night? No, they are very good. As I stipulated earlier though, not suitable for the fuel warning light though. The led bulbs required for background lighting are those with the led's mounted on the side, whilst the warning lights are better served with a single upright led. (cheaper too) Sorry should have mentioned. Led bulbs are polarity direction sensitive unlike normal bulbs. When fitting to a dismantled dash always turn ignition on and check all led's illuminate as they should. If one fails, turn it around 180 degrees in the mount and retry. FYI. diversionclub.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=parts&thread=16460&page=1

I could only find 5W panel bulbs, so went for LEDs and the panel looks much better. I didnt do the warning lights lucky I guess because I had no idea the low fuel light needs to have a bulb. The LEDs look great, but mine had crummy looking wire contacts on the sides. Two needed a blob of solder on the wires to get a good contact and now one I didnt solder is going intermittent. So a solder blob on every one wouldnt hurt.

That's them. but as tomcat said keep to a filament bulb for the low fuel light. They haven't made my dash too bright, But I've not used them in the warning lights. TBH the indicators could do with being brighter but maybe not the main beam.

No, you don't need to split the instrument panel, bulbs pull out from the bottom.

While you are at it, drill the indicator brackets on the fairing frame then you can easily attach some brackets to take some daylights under the fairing "cheeks" (if the mood ever takes you).

Thanks to all those who offered advice on here, not just regarding which bulbs to buy, but also for fairing removal.... Replace both panel and warning light bulbs this morning, it's actually a piece of cake...once you've done it, pushing the rubber insert nuts in and out was a first, other than that...plain sailing.. So, before and after shots....
