In the past a Normandy run has been organized around Easter. Last year Mac had to pull out and the annual trip to France fell by the wayside. So I've been mulling over a change of scenery by offering my part of Brittany as a base for a long weekend's 'sortie'. Primarily I need to know if there's enough of you wanting to come over, and if so, when. I propose a Friday morning to Monday morning along the lines of the Normandy Run in the past. Camping or B&B. Arrival ports are Caen, Cherbourg or St. Malo, the latter being only 90 minutes away from here. There are two spaces in the calendar which won't coincide with dates already taken and they are: Easter week-end 22-25th April 2011, or 10-13th June 2011. [Note that Easter is very late and may provide better weather. Also, Morbihan in southern Brittany has warmer temperatures than the Channel coastline. No promises though.] So feel free to post below with any comments or questions. If sufficient interest is registered I'd be pleased to flesh-out the bones. Pilgrim. Post modified 06/01/2011: DETAILS FOR THE WEEKEND ARE IN POST 19 SO LOOK FURTHER DOWN

Thanks Bev. That means that all YDC members will be going or they'll be glued to UK Eurosport to watch the race an hour later? Not likely. No interest, ok. to most of you, couldn't even manage a word or two......... Oh, and "thanks for all the fish" Pilgrim.

I was only pointing out that weekend clashed with the British round of Moto GP. I normally can't commit to dates this early due to work, hoping that will change with the new job. ( less travelling) I'm sure others are the same.

It's out of season time on here, so I think most folks probably don't look in very often; other than the hard core of usual suspects who keep the place going . I would have been interested in a trip to Brittany, but for me who lives a days ride from the channel (and another day to get back) it involves taking holidays. At this stage I couldn't commit to doing that before seeing if the run is actually going to go ahead. Which means, is anyone else interested?

Thanks Bev and Brandane. Points taken. I appreciate that Bonny Scotland is a long way away from the Channel ports to begin with. I posted the thread to guage interest and as yet there is precious little (none!) after 60+ views. I was hoping re-kindle a bit of 'Normandy' spirit but as yet not even 'a good idea' or 'I'm keen if the Mrs will let me' has popped up. I'd like to think the holiday period might be more friutfuL.......... We'll see.

Pilgrim. Just a few pointers really, posting to try to organise a run is not easy, and at this time of year will be hard to get interest for next year. Some dates that have been booked, the run WILL go ahead, but as yet, no one has signed up for any, (except the frosty and jan jolly) obviously for your own run, a weekend away for us is a must, due to distance etc.. so posting your start point, and perhaps a preferred village location may help, as it will allow 'us' to look at places to stay and costs involved, as this is very important , before commiting to joining the run. plus ..... easter weekend OR june.... what will it be? easter has been the more 'usual' date for the past runs, and has had mixed weather. but this easter is a bit different, due to this wedding , and only a handfull of people have attended past normandy runs. june would probably have better weather prospects though !
I would love to commit, but can't for many reasons, and that has been the same for the past runs abroad.
This is not having a go , Pilgrim, just trying to highlight some of the 'problem' in trying to organise, and some possible reasons why no one has YET responded, so don't worry yet that not much interest shown.

Also people sometimes sit back and wait for the date to be set, then decide whether to come.
In my experience you just have to set a date, you can offer alternatives but will find yourself going round in circles.
Good Luck

In Short. Set a date, post some details of the area and runs if poss. Interest will no doubt be registered at a later date. Wop up a few pictures or links of your local area to sell the idea. No need to do anything else until you get some sign ups. Whatever date you set will not suit some, (Porcaro last year coincided with my wife's 50th) if you offer a choice of dates it will confuse the issue. Have the usual run organisers send you my work schedule so that you can arrange it when I can't attend.

Pilgrim, cannot do this as we are visiting the Swiss alps in July 2011 and these dates are too close together for me due to work commitments. However, if you consider doing again in 2012 then we might well be very interested as we have not visited that area of france on the bike yet. Thanks for offering to guide a tour Ian

C'mon Gordy! There's still 4 months to go this year and 5 months 'til May next year. Best advice to all who are getting into the next biking calendar.....HAVE A BREAK.....HAVE CHRISTMAS.....AND HOGMANAY! Why do you all complain because 'Xmas' starts in August.....HUH? I know, 'I must get in first'! Sorry, but the summer hols. aren't over yet FFS! Enjoy the rest of the year and start next year on...........Jan.1st!!! maybe there's some sage advice contained above.....i don't know. i will be in brittany (and probably on a bike) on that second weekend but a couple of hours away.....on a bike run.

I must again thank you all for your advice. Feel free to comment on my reasoning below: It is paramount that a run like this is considered early due to distance and travel arrangements, it's a mini holiday, after all. Also apart from the 4 days proposed to be in France many may have an extra day added onto either or both ends just to get to and from the ports. A weekend run in England/Scotland might run into 3 days at the most and won't usually have serious consequences on family plans or time off work etc. Like the JR and other weekends the Normandy sorties were planned almost straight away after return to the UK for the next year. I agree with points about a set date. I offered two possible weekends because (historically) Easter has had MISERABLE weather. If you're camping you have nowhere to dry things. Add cold to that too, well. Hence I was proposing the traditional time in April and a warmer alternative.........maybe. I proposed Porcaro last year (yes nearly as soon as the JR, n4naked ). The date was set, not by me, I proposed details of where to stay, a rough timetable, links to the event, music at the concert and even BBQ etc. In the event I rode the main run alone. I know you can't predict the weather but that was also a factor in August! You may see my reticence in jumping in too deep to start with, perhaps. Once bitten.......... I have had some contact with Mac before proposing dates and we both agreed that it would need some lead from the UK side, a coordinator to meet up with to come over together ideally. I was looking for someone to simply take that up, with a bit of arm twisting maybe. You will remember that Normandy 2009 run was a bit 'meet-up at the port and follow the leader'. A couple of you have asked where I am. Google Map 'La Gacilly, France' and you'll find me. A brief description was included in my original post, however. I hope that puts a little more reasoning into my initial approach. I will reset the parameters and advance more information. The date will be set for Easter weekend. (I didn't like putting the question mark in my thread title either.......... ) Pilgrim.

I'm seriously interested - not managed to get to France yet on the bike. Choose a weekend, start a sign-up sheet, & I'll make every possible effort to attend !

Have we got any ideas on prices for camping?? For Porcaro last year it was about 15 Euros per night at the nearest site from here (tent/bike/one or two people). I'm not sure which sites are open at Easter. If you give me a little time to check them out I'll post definate info shortly.

There was a issue about the campsites being open for the 2009 Normandy run as easter was very early (mid March).
Turns out that most Municipal campsites open April 1st or Easter whichever is the earlier.
Better check this is the case with your local site though
